Kydex Holster Sweat Guard Height
I’m not going to tell you what sweat guard you need, BUT I will tell you which one I always choose and why.
.
In my opinion, choosing to have no sweat guard is not wise. A sweat guard is much more than it’s name. It does keep the sweat off your gun, sure, but it plays a roll in preventing human error when holstering a loaded gun, on body, at the range.
.
Scenario (No sweat guard): You are practicing your draw from concealment with live fire at the range. You aren’t doing as well as you would like. You’re frustrated, distracted even. You go to holster your loaded gun for the 15th time and out of frustration you forget to LOOK your gun into the holster, and as a result your garment doesn’t get fully cleared. Since you have no sweat guard your shirt easily feeds into the holster with your gun, and through the trigger guard, as you punch it into its place. You just had an ND, while holstering on your body. Sure hope you had your hips forward and you avoided getting shot.
.
Sounds like a super unlikely scenario huh? I just watched a guy do this MULTIPLE times at the range a few months back. Luckily he was so distracted that he didn’t push his gun all the way into the holster. He stopped when he felt that resistance, but still didn’t look his dang gun into the holster, and made no attempts at clearing his shirt ahead of time.
.
First, don’t be that guy that doesn’t look the gun into the holster, and if you must do so for training purposes then CLEAR YOUR DANG GARMENT.
.
My preference is a mid sweat guard because it helps to keep clothing and such out of the holster, but it’s also not so high that it pokes me when I’m training unholstered at the range.
.
At the end of the day, do what you’re gonna do. I’m sure you have a reason for it. I get asked often what height I choose and why. The mid sweat guard is there for my comfort and to keep clothing from easily feeding into the holster.
